The Last Thursday of October: Singing, Dancing, and Vibing

On the last Thursday of October, 2022, HFI held one of the most popular student-organized events at HFI, a feast of cooperation between multiple clubs and organizations. Even amidst the early round of college application deadlines, seniors took the night off for this event. The 12th annual event of Voice of HFI has ended at HFI. This year, the performances have been more amazing than ever, with a sweet (romantic) surprise sandwiched in.

How Voice Works

In the first round qualifiers, any contestant can submit a 30-60s recording to have it voted by a public judging group. Judges will vote for their favorite singers. Fifteen singers gaining the highest votes will qualify to move on to the second round, where each contestant performs a song in a professional recording studio. Then a group of student judges vote for their recorded performances. According to the result of the voting, the top six finalists can qualify to the final round. Those voted out can choose to participate in another resurrection round to win a second chance to reach the final, and only two people will be resurrected. In the final round, the actual event of Voice, each of the eight contestants will sing live on the stage. During the night of Voice, the eight second-round winners each perform a song in the first round. The audience rates the singer with a score of 1-5. The top four singers will perform again for a second round. Then the audience votes for another round, and the top 2 contestants will be the King or Queen of Voice for the year.

In the first half of the Voice event, the contestants Jesia Yu, Amy Xv, Annie He, Bernice Wang, Andy Jiao, Vicky Tan, Suri Huang and Scarlett Huang performed wonderfully. When Jesia went on stage, everyone had their phones ready to record, awaiting her voice singing "One Last Time". Annie impressed the crowd with the song "Levitating" and Andy flowed through his rhythms with his raps. Some of the singing was even on par if not better than the original song!

At half time, clubs from HFI, Muse and Fusion, presented captivating performances. The singing from Muse surprised the audience with how good they were. People's attention was glued to the stage.

In round two, the top four contestants Bernice Wang, Scarlett Huang, Andy Jiao and Annie He sang an enchanting song respectively. Among all, Scarlett Huang performed "The King of Karaoke", the most reputed song of Eason Chan. All the audience sang along with her with flashlights swaying in the air and music rippling in the warm atmosphere. At last, all the audience burst into loud applause.

At the end of the show, the names of the Queens of Voice were eventually announced. Scarlett Huang and Annie He won the title of honor due to their outstanding singing skills and affectionate expressions.

Interviews:

In order to have insights on Voice of HFI 2022-2023 from some different perspective, we interviewed a couple of participants from this event, including activity organizers, teacher, and performers. We get to see what teachers and students’ feelings were, what they reaped out of this this activity, and what their expectations for future Voice activities would be.

(Vicky Zhou - HFI Teacher)

Voice is a great stage to show singing ability. As a teacher, you will be surprised and a chance to get to know your classmates in a different perspective.

(Vicky Tan - Finalist/Performer)

What surprised me is that compared to previous events, I find myself much calmer than before when facing a huge crowd. I won't start getting nervous days before the event. The studio recording was great. The staff there were really patient and the results were good. I'll participate again if I have time next year.

(Annie He - Finalist/Performer/Queen of Voice)

First, I am absolutely happy about winning Voice of HFI 2022-2023. To me, it is not merely a competition, but a medium for me to express myself through singing and a stage where I can truly enjoy myself in singing. What has made Voice so special to me is not about merely going on stage and singing – it is the audience and my friends that has made this experience so dear to me. The wave of flashlights swaying along with the music, my friends calling out to me from the auditorium and their deafening screams, the bouquet of champagne roses and daisies – is what I will never forget and even after many years, I will still smile when simply thinking of this experience.

(Layla-Organizer/President of C.L.A.P.)

One of the things that pleased me and the entire management layer about the Voice of HFI was the overall fluency and efficiency of the event. For Voice of HFI, an event that spans a long period of time and has multiple rounds, organizing it is actually quite a challenge. Each round of the competition system needs to be organized and prepared meticulously, such as publicity, technical preparation, cooperation of all parties, and finally the implementation. In just one month and a half, we successfully organized four big rounds of competition in total. Overall, I hope you all have fully enjoyed the charm of music at Voice of HFI 2022-2023. See you next year!
