Dear parents, teachers and students:

Good afternoon!

The south wind is soothing, the shade of green fills the garden, and it is the time of graduation. Today, we are gathered here to witness the 134 graduates of the International Department of the High School Affiliated to South China Normal University (SCNU) in the class of 2025 set sail for the distant future! On behalf of all the people of the Affiliated High School of South China Normal University, I would like to express my warm congratulations to all the graduates present! I would like to express my high respect and sincere greetings to the teachers of the International Department who have worked so hard! At the same time, I would like to express my gratitude to all the parents and people from all walks of life here for your consistent trust and support of HFI!

Looking back on our three-year journey, we have experienced the world's turbulence and renewal--In the autumn and winter of 2022, the campus was closed, and we held fast to our academic beginnings in the classroom in the cloud; in 2023, the dawn broke, and the ChatGPT was launched, redrawing the boundaries of knowledge; and in 2024, 'A Hundred Boats Contesting for Water' was reappeared on the Seine River in Paris; in 2025, the new wave of science and technology swept across the globe, reshaping the world's economy, politics, society and culture with its unstoppable force.

It is in this wave of change and crisis that the 2025 graduates of HFI are riding the wave together. Under the long-term persistence of the school's standardised operation, rigorous governance and scientific management, 134 graduates have successfully completed their high school studies and achieved satisfactory results of admission to overseas universities. According to incomplete statistics, in the application season that has just ended, they harvested a total of 860 offers from 8 countries and regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc., and the total amount of scholarships exceeded 37 million RMB.

Let us once again express our warmest congratulations to the students who have successfully entered overseas universities for further studies!

In a way, the high school graduation ceremony is a coming-of-age ceremony organised in the name of the school. "Adulthood is more than just being dressed up in formal attire; it is also about having a more mature mind and civic consciousness. As we part ways, I hope that students will focus on two skills that will make them more stable, confident, and independent as adults.

Torch of discernment: the ability to think and ask questions, to be a qualified digital citizen.

Once upon a time, information was scarce, and answers required a long process of thinking and searching. Many years ago, HFI students had to read a lot of books and materials before completing an essay, and there were original books full of questions and key phrases, or notes taken after browsing web pages or videos. In a few years' light, though, hfichatgpt was used much more frequently.

As ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and other major language models continue to be optimised and information and answers become available at our fingertips, we enjoy both convenience and choice. In the era of information overload and rapid iteration of knowledge, we tend to think: more information means more knowledge gained and more we know. But are we still as willing today as we were in the past to put in the time to interrogate the answers, think through the essentials, discern right from wrong, and be steadfast and persistent in our minds?

We have all heard the words of teachers in class encouraging questions: asking questions means thinking, and learning with thinking is high quality. Students, questioning the world is one of the most valuable aspects of human nature, and learning is about developing higher-order thinking. Thus we can see through paragraphs written by AI, spot the nonsense of AI fabricating data or documentary sources, and even eventually perceive the complexity of online data itself.

Therefore, as citizens of the digital age, you should actively seek progress in thinking hard, practice courage in questioning, express yourselves accurately in asking questions, keep a clear mind, analyse the phenomenon objectively, be correct and innovative, and apply what you learnt, so that the convenience of science and technology can be integrated with the joy of learning.

Building the rainbow of civilisation: cross-cultural communication skills and being a qualified cultural ambassador.

I saw that teachers, students and parents of HFI had just successfully completed the annual 'Gobi Trek'. In that boundless sea of sand, a model of cross-cultural exchange has been staged for 2,000 years, showing the wisdom and courage of Chinese civilisation in the face of foreign civilisations: 2,000 years ago, Zhang Qian steered his horse westward across the vastness of the Gobi, through all the hardships, opened up the Silk Road, and set up a rainbow bridge for exchanges between Eastern and Western civilisations. He not only brought back the treasures of the Western Regions, but also sowed the seeds of cultural exchange. Hundreds of years later, Venerable Xuanzang also embarked on a journey to the west, and with his firm beliefs and profound knowledge, he successfully crossed the treacherous Pamir Plateau, and through trials and tribulations, eventually brought the wisdom of Buddhism back to his homeland. Today, with the same courage and determination, you will embark on a journey of communication with the world.

The ability to communicate across cultures has been a valuable asset of our nation since ancient times. You don't have to worry that you can't rely on yourselves in a new environment. The 5,000-year-old Chinese culture is your spiritual home, the 2,000-year-old Guangzhou City is your starting place, and thousands of alumni of HFI and your parents, teachers and friends who are always concerned about you are your strongest backing!

There are students from all over the world in the overseas university campuses; under the sky of other countries, there are customs of different civilisations. Go to vast mountains and rivers, go to distant villages and towns, see different landscapes, meet different people, make heartfelt friends, abide by the rules of civilisation, understand the phenomena of society, stick to your own mind, do not blindly follow, do not be arrogant.

In addition to seeing the world and appreciating the diversity of cultures, the core qualities of a cultural ambassador are the ability to see beneath the surface and the willingness to take on heavy responsibilities and dedicate oneself to improving the status quo: over 150 years ago, when modern international students went abroad to pursue their studies, they carried on their shoulders the mission of salvation; 80 years ago, when the United Nations was born from the ashes of the post-war period, it carried the common vision of mankind for peace and co-operation. However, the global challenges of recent years - the existential crisis brought about by climate change, the humanitarian catastrophe caused by regional conflicts, the dilemma of international cooperation under the impact of epidemics, and the crisis of trust in the process of globalisation - have all tested the resilience and wisdom of this international organisation. Overseas students are not only seekers of knowledge, but also disseminators of civilisation. You should carry forward the Huafu spirit of ‘Dare to be first, advocate autonomy, and pursue excellence’, and do what you can to contribute to the harmony of the community. The education you receive should nurture respect and tolerance, not bigotry and arrogance; the knowledge you learn should lead to cooperation and win-win situation, not superiority and camping; and the beliefs you hold should be able to find a chance of survival in a crisis and reach a consensus in a disagreement. May you contribute your wisdom and strength to the building of a ‘community of human destiny’ in a broader world with the commitment and vision of Chinese youth.

Students, graduation means the end of high school and the beginning of a new journey. May you maintain your curiosity about the unknown, your love for life, your sympathy for the people of the world, be mature adults, continue to practice, continue to improve, be safe and successful, and come back to share your stories with us more often.

Finally, I would like to thank all the parents for entrusting their children to Huafu. They are not only the pride of you but also the pride of Huafu. Once again, I would like to thank all the teachers and staffs for their dedication and commitment, and I wish you all the best!
