Good "evening" students, families, teachers, and honored guests,
Today is a moment to recognize that it is a celebration a goodbye and a new beginning. In this short time we have together, I want to share something a little unusual that's stayed with me ever since I heard it. It comes from astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson ---- not someone you'd expect to show up at a graduation speech, maybe ---- but stay with me.
To summarize it, he once spoke about dogs and time. He said that maybe, just maybe, dogs don't live as long as we do because they already know how to do something we humans are still learning: how to factor in their mortality. They live a whole week in just one day.
Think about that. A dog wakes up ready to love, to explore, to be fully in the moment. They're not worried about tomorrow's problems or last week's mistakes. Every day they live that day to its fullest. And if you've ever had a dog, you know exactly what that looks like: the joy, the loyalty, the presence, the love.
Now here we are, standing at the edge of your graduation ---- a day packed with so much meaning it feels like a lifetime is folded into it. In many ways, this day is your "week in a day". It holds your excitement, your pride, your fear, your gratitude. It's the end of childhood and the beginning of something new. It's joy and sadness in the same breath.
But more than that, this moment is a reminder.
You've learned a lot in your years here at HFI. How to think critically, how to solve problems, how to write, how to speak, how to collaborate. But you've also learned how to live. You've built friendships that may last forever. You've shown resilience when things were tough. You've found laughter in unexpected places. And you've grown, not just in knowledge, but in heart.
So what if, going forward, you made a choice to live the way dogs do? What if you didn't wait until "someday" to enjoy life? What if you loved people without holding back? What if you gave your full attention to the present moment instead of rushing toward the next?
Be curious. Be loyal to what matters. Find joy in small things. Forgive quickly. Love loudly. Laugh often. Make every single day count.
If you can do that, then you don't need a long life to live a meaningful one. And even better, you'll make the world a better place just by being fully in it.
Class of 2025, your time here at HFI may be ending, but your story is only just beginning. And let me tell you, we are so proud of the chapter you've written here. You've become a permanent part of our school’s story and we’ll always carry your spirit in our halls.
So go forward. Keep learning. Keep growing. And whenever you forget what matters, remember this simple truth: Live like you have one week in a day.
Congratulations. We believe in you, we're proud of you and we can't wait to see what you do next.
